In case you haven't realized this, Lake Erie is BIG!!! From the shore, you can only see water on the horizon. No shoreline. With the wave action we saw, it was easy to think you might be on the Atlantic coast. The Lakeside Campground we stayed at in Ripley New York was located on the shore between Erie Pennsylvania and Buffalo New York. Unlike our familiar Kerr Lake, the shore line was very rocky at the campground. No swimming was allowed by state law. There must have a lifeguard to swim. This didn't stop folks from doing it, just wasn't allowed by law. Good thing this doesn't apply at Kerr Lake. I don't think there are lifeguards anywhere on that lake.
